| Why are mature students more cliquey and competetive? Basically I am in my second year of a history degree. There is a group of other mature students in my lecture and seminar group, who constantly cling to each other. Their 'leader' is this 40 year old housewife who is quite pretentious and concieted. I try and be nice and work with them bt they seem to rebuff me! They-mainly the ring leader- only talk to me to catch me out or undermine my confidence (eg "I've allready thought of my dissetation next year, have you?", "my seminar tutor told me I am gifted and have a lot of potential" or my favourite "have you done this weeks reading?"[no i just mess about and watch day time TV(!)]). Maybe they think I am unintelligent/lazy and an easy target to make themselves feel better! Oh and I suspect the ring leader of colluding with her best mate (also in this group) and I am tempted to grass them up as (a) theyre gits! (b) theyve given themselves an unfair advantage! |
| I have never noticed that about the mature students at my schools. When I worked with them as a fellow student they were usually the nicest ones and among the hardest workers, and when I was a TA and had them as students they were almost always the ones I could count on to attend every class, turn assignments in on time, deal with things like lower-than-expected grades in a mature manner, follow the directions in the syllabus or assignment handouts, etc. I always looked forward to having them in my classes because I knew there would be at least one student or classmate I could get along with, since even though I was often half their age (or younger!) I tended to have more in common with them than my immature, cliquey, college-age classmates who were more concerned with where to get their next beer and where to find an easy A than with actually learning anything. It could be that you have just found a bunch of bad eggs. It does happen. Or maybe you're reading the situation wrong (e.g. it's not "I've already thought of my dissertation next year, have you?" but rather, "Hey, I've been thinking about my dissertation for next year, how about you?" as a means of, you know, being friendly and bonding over something that is definitely a shared experience for both of you). They might prefer hanging out with each other because they feel they have more in common with each other than with the younger college crowd. For example, while it's not unheard of for a student of typical college age to have a long-term full-time job, guys to take care of, ailing parents to take care of, and tons of things to do related to those responsibilities, it's much more likely that a 40-something mature student will have those things to worry about. If their behavior bothers you so much, just ignore them. You don't HAVE to hang out with them or like them, and they don't have to hang out with or like you either. Spend some time trying to make friends with your other classmates instead. |

| If you KNOW that you don't need to be with these guys, then when you meet them you need to not let it go any farther. I know it is hard when you are attracted to them, but in the long run it is better to not put yourself through the same thing over and over again. I know it is hard being single for a long time, I'm in the same boat, but in the end it is better than getting your heart broken over and over again by guys that you know are going to do it. Just hang out with your single friends, enjoy being 18 and having fun, and the right person will come along eventually (going out with nothing but couples will end up making you feel worse and like a huge third wheel, trust me on that one). | I'm not sure about Australia, but in the United States, most public school systems require a teacher to have certain educational levels depending on what grade level you teach. For example, if you are going to teach K-12 (ages 4 - 18 - primary and secondary school here), you need to have a Bachelor's Degree and some kind of teaching certificate in the state you are going to teach. The requirements for the certificate depend on the state. If you want to teach at a community college (where the highest degree obtainable by students in an Associates Degree, or two-year degree), then you usually need a Master's Degree to teach. If you want to teach at a University, then you need a PhD to teach there, but not always. So you could ask yourself what grade level you want to teach. Do you want to teach University students or do you want to teach eight-year old guys in fourth grade? Because that will greatly affect what level of education/certification you need to obtain. If you can find some kind of open art studio in your area, they may allow you to assist in teaching after-school art classes to guys, without any kind of education or certification! So look into all your options, then contact the local community college or university and speak with a career counselor about the different opportunities available. And enroll in some classes, art classes and art education classes. Good luck!! |
